Suicide Prevention Service Background
As a group we came to pick the Suicide Prevention Service as our non-profit organization to inform the class about. A member in our group was once very involved in the organization and told us of the great experience she had at the organization. There she volunteered as a phone operator and answered hundreds of calls around the clock. To fully understand why her volunteer position to the organization was so important you must first understand what the organization is and what services it has to offer.
The main function of the Suicide Prevention Service is it's twenty-four seven suicide prevention hotline. The line is open to callers who fell suicidal, worried about someone who is suicidal, know someone who is suicidal, or are grieving the lost of a person who has committed suicide. All calls are answered by a trained volunteer. The Suicide Prevention Service offers spring and fall training for anyone who may be interested in helping out the organization. Volunteers are trained on how to talk to potentially suicidal persons and guide them to a brighter future. Volunteers are there as supporters and do not pass judgement in any situation. If you are not calling as a suicidal person but have concern for a suicidal friend or have lost someone to suicide the hotline is there to suggest other services that may help you. Services such as support groups or individual counseling may be suggested. The training that the volunteer is put through ensures that they will have a helpful and positive outlook on situations surrounding suicide. Although all calls do not necessarily involve suicide. Yes the hotline is set up to deal with suicide and the aftermath of suicide but some callers may call just to talk out of pure loneliness and they need someone to listen to their troubles.
It is clear that the main feature of the Suicide Prevention Service is the hotline it is not fair to overlook the other services it represents in order to prevent suicide in the Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. Counties in which suicide has been greatly reduced since the start of the Suicide Prevention Service. The organization offers a website where viewers can discover information on suicide and programs that help people deal with suicide. One of the more helpful features is a list of warning signs that are associated with suicide. Some examples being statements or threats of suicide, giving away prized possessions, or sudden mood elevation. There are many more warning signs located on the official Suicide Prevention Service website with descriptions of what that warning sign entails. This organization addresses every aspect of suicide and ways to deal with loosing someone to suicide.
On the Suicide Prevention Service website they are not only concerned with people wanting to commit suicide but they also want to help those who have lost a loved one to suicide. The service offers the twenty-four hour hotline as a way to vent and talk to a volunteer about the emotions your experiencing at that time. They also offer a variety of brochures filled with information about suicide and how to prevent and deal with it. You can either download the brochures or have them mailed to you personally. If you are more of an open interactive person they offer support groups which they say reduces the feeling of isolation, creates a safe place to express feelings and emotions, helps participants to access resources to help themselves and others, and lastly it ensures the group that they are not alone. Individual counseling is also suggested for those who have lost a loved one, some participate in both group and individual counseling. For those grieving they may find the volunteer training classes helpful because there they will be trained on how to potentially prevent a suicide and in turn save a life. The Suicide Prevention Service offers two training sessions a year. In the sessions you will learn how to be an active listener, strategies to help intervene on a dangerous situation and many more helpful skills and resources.
By informing you on this wonderful community organization we hope that you can clearly see why we choose it in the first place. The Suicide Prevention Service offers a variety of programs including their twenty-four hour hotline, vital information on suicide and early prevention, and counseling sessions. The main reason we were drawn to the organization is because it is completely run by community volunteers who take time out of their lives to make a difference.
